Year 9 students at Durrington High School had the exciting opportunity to take part in a TEDx Worthing Public Speaking Workshop this week, held in the comfort of our air-conditioned Performing Arts Centre, in preparation for their spoken language assessments.
The engaging session was led by TEDx Worthing organisers Toby Moore and Zoe-Beth Hobbs, who shared their expertise gained from supporting more than 150 TEDx speakers. The workshop aimed to challenge common misconceptions about public speaking and demonstrate that effective communication is a skill that anyone can develop.
Students began by learning about the global TED and TEDx movement, as well as the work of TEDx Worthing in bringing inspiring ideas and speakers to local audiences. The facilitators then explored why many people find public speaking difficult, helping students understand that nervousness is a natural part of presenting.
The highlight of the workshop was an exploration of the “Four Pillars of Effective Public Speaking.” Students discovered how strong structure helps speakers organise their ideas clearly, how storytelling can create meaningful connections with an audience, and how body language communicates powerful messages beyond words. They also learned techniques for using their voice effectively to engage listeners and deliver presentations with confidence.
Throughout the session, students were encouraged to participate, ask questions, and reflect on how these skills can be applied in a range of situations, including classroom presentations, interviews, performances, and everyday conversations.
The workshop concluded with an open question-and-answer session, giving students the chance to learn more from Toby and Zoe-Beth’s experiences working with TEDx speakers.
By the end of the event, students had gained practical tools to help manage nerves, improve presentation skills, and communicate their ideas with greater confidence. The experience provided valuable insights that will support them both in school and beyond.
A huge thank you to Toby Moore and Zoe-Beth Hobbs from TEDx Worthing for delivering such an inspiring and informative workshop, as well as kindly gifting 10 tickets to our students to attend their forthcoming TEDx Worthing event.
