Extra-Curricular Clubs: Something for Everyone!

There are more opportunities than ever for students to get involved in extra-curricular clubs at Durrington High School. Whether you’re looking to try something new, build skills for the future, or simply have fun with friends, there is a wide range of activities running both at lunchtime and after school.

Our sports clubs continue to be a big hit, with activities such as athletics, cricket, rounders, futsal, dodgeball, and volleyball offering students the chance to stay active and be part of a team. For Year 7 students, futsal is a great introduction to fast-paced, small-sided football, helping to build confidence, teamwork, and ball control in a fun and supportive environment.

Creative students are also well catered for. From band night and creative writing to dance club and the whole school musical, there are plenty of ways to express yourself. Dance club remains especially popular, giving students the chance to learn new moves, make friends, and enjoy music in a relaxed setting. Meanwhile, the fashion and textiles club for Year 9 students offers a fantastic opportunity to explore design ideas, develop practical sewing skills, and work on unique, creative projects.

For those who enjoy performing, opportunities like karaoke, pantomime, and Dance Live provide a stage to showcase talent and build confidence. Music lovers can also get involved in band night, where students collaborate and perform together in live shows and lunchtime gigs in the Library!

If you prefer something more strategic or academic, there are plenty of options too. Chess club, coding club, STEM club (Year 8), and science club (Year 7) all encourage problem-solving and curiosity. The Lego Spike club for Year 8 combines creativity with engineering, allowing students to design, build, and program their own interactive models.

Technology enthusiasts can also join Girls Who Code, open to KS3 girls, which empowers students to develop coding skills, work on exciting projects, and explore future careers in technology in a supportive environment.

For students who enjoy quieter activities, book club and silent reading provide a calm space to relax with a good book, while history club offers the chance to explore fascinating events from the past in more depth.

Gaming and hands-on clubs are also available. The Minecraft club for Years 7 and 8 allows students to collaborate, build imaginative worlds, and develop problem-solving skills in a fun, creative way. Rubix Cube club challenges students to improve their speed and logic, while Lego-based activities encourage teamwork and innovation.

Language lovers can join the MFL club (for KS3 students), where they can explore new cultures, practise speaking skills, and take part in fun language-based activities.

Careers club, which runs every lunchtime, is proving especially popular with Year 7 following their recent careers introduction sessions. Students can visit the Careers Department to use the Xello platform to explore future pathways, complete homework, or speak with Mr Henry about their ambitions and ideas.

Finally, inclusive spaces like the LGBTQ+ club provide a welcoming and supportive environment where students can chat, share experiences, and feel part of a community.

With such a wide variety of clubs on offer, there truly is something for everyone. Getting involved is a great way to make new friends, discover new interests, and make the most of school life—so why not give something a try?
