The Amazing Book Awards

There was a hive of activity among students and authors last week, with everybody buzzing about reading at our Amazing Book Awards (ABAs).

Last Friday (June 19th) DHS hosted the much-awaited ABAs, which was held for the first time ever in our wonderful Performing Arts Centre, in collaboration with Shoreham Academy and Davison High School.

The event welcomed the fantastic Benjamin Dean, former ABA silver winner and author of children’s and young adult fiction. Benjamin was our compère for the evening and he introduced the five authors, all shortlisted for writing the books our students love the most.

The nominated authors were: Annaliese Avery (The Wycherleys), Sue H. Cunningham (Cloud Nine), Ravena Guron (Mondays are Murder), Bryony Pearce (Aphrodite) and Rosie Talbot (We Three Witches).

Each author spent time talking to the audience about their life as an author, how they get inspired to write and how they come up with new ideas for their next book.

There was a Q&A where students asked some insightful questions, before the winner and runners-up were announced.

The winners of this year’s Amazing Book Awards are:

Annaliese Avery won the Bronze ABA

Sue H. Cunningham won the Silver ABA

Ravena Guron won the Gold ABA

Vivienne DaCosta, library manager at Durrington High and one of the ABA organisers, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people support an event we are very proud of. The Amazing Book Awards provides a golden opportunity for students to meet several authors in one room, converse with them and it encourages them to read books they may not have considered reading before.”
