Year 10 GCSE Citizenship

Our year 10s started their GCSE Citizenship course getting to grips with who we are in the UK; specifically, tackling questions such as ‘Who is in our community?’ (Local & National) and ‘How are groups in our community treated?’ Using this knowledge, they went on to assess how groups in our community are treated, such as what is happening to the UK population, discrimination and the law, and how human rights protect citizens.

This term students have been tackling questions around democracy, ‘How does voting in the UK work?’ and ‘What do our political parties stand for?’ ‘How governments are formed?’ ‘How laws are made’ and ‘How our government runs the country in terms of budgets and setting agenda.’

When the students return after the Easter break they will spend the Summer term studying how the law works and gain an in-depth understanding of the legal system in the UK, looking at criminal and civil law, courts, and the roles in the legal process. They will go on to tackle questions such as ‘How are youth offenders treated through the criminal justice system?’ And ‘How can we reduce crime?’

“I enjoy Citizenship because we get to learn interesting things about the world we live in such as how constitutions are different between the UK and US, how parliament and UK politics works and how and why we are taxed. I think Citizenship is an important subject that every student should learn, to learn more about the world they live in.” Amara in year 10

“Citizenship allows us to learn about all the laws and constitution of the UK. it also teaches us about how parliament works and how laws are passed.” Lydia in year 10

“I picked Citizenship because I was good at SME and it seemed interesting from the taster session in year 9. I was also recommended to pick Citizenship by my SME teacher.” Riley in year 10

“I picked Citizenship because I think it is interesting and it can give you a better understanding of the world, politics and our rights.” Maya in year 10
