After an enforced break last year due to COVID restrictions, we were delighted to be able to host our annual Careers Evening for year 11 students and their parents /carers again this year. The evening took place on Monday 27th September and provided an informative and inspiring evening for our students as they begin to think about their journey after Durrington High.
There was a wealth of exhibitors to speak with who represented a range of colleges, sixth forms and employers. This ensured there was something relevant to all students and gave them valuable time to speak in person to experts that can guide them in making decisions to help them achieve their goals. It was the perfect opportunity for both students and parents to ask questions and find out more about the many pathways there are to choose from.
Our fantastic careers team were also on hand to offer general advice and guidance and the National Citizen Service were there to talk about the benefits of volunteer experiences, which can help build skills that will give good grounding in the workplace.
‘We are delighted to be able to hold this important event again this year. It is fantastic to see such a high turn out and so many engaging conversations happening between students, their families and the exhibitors. There is such a wide range of post 16 opportunities available, from studying A-levels to vocational courses and work based apprenticeships, so it’s really valuable to have these options represented in one place.’
Team Durrington alumni and former Head Boy Marcus Foxwell also attended the evening and it was fantastic to catch up with him 3 years after he left DHS. After studying maths, physics and economics at Worthing College he has just started an electronic engineering apprenticeship degree at the Spellman High Voltage Corporation alongside the University of Chichester. This means he is combining studying and working full time. This keeps him busy but he is very much enjoying the challenge.
DHS gave me great foundations. The careers evening was very useful as it gave me such a broad range of information. My advice to year 11s would be to take your time and don’t panic
The year 11 students left feeling informed and parents commented that it was a ‘very useful’ evening. The evening is part of the Project College initiative in which our careers team work closely with year 11 students to support them as they make important decisions about their education after Durrington High.
