Pride of Durrington Awards 2025

Volunteer of the year award

Ryan Young

Ryan volunteers as a Youth Ambassador for local bereavement charity Andy’s Angels. This year he has helped organise and host a talent show; helped fundraise at a number of events, and has participated in various activities to promote the charity and raise awareness of the support they offer. As Youth Ambassador, this student contributes to the development of support, resources and activities offered through the charity and uses his own experience and empathy to help shape the support offered to other bereaved children. Most importantly, this student volunteers at the grief play cafe every month, where he is always ready to lend a helping hand; get stuck in with a game or activity, or just be a friendly face to be there to support others. We are incredibly proud of him and think he is an amazing role model and such a kind and thoughtful young man.

Congratulations Ryan – Volunteer of the year award.

Greatest contribution to charity

Lilly Halliwell & Zac Woodcock

We have two winners of this award and it has gone to a pair of volunteers who embody everything that we want in students at DHS. For a long time, both of these students have volunteered at a local charity for children with complex disabilities. The Chanctonbury Community Playscheme relies on the support of selfless individual that are willing to give up their time to provide a memorable and valuable experience for the children that use the service. Not only do volunteers have to be dedicated, reliable and patient, they have to want to make a difference. Both of these students have shown clearly that they have the ability to do this alongside studying for their GCSEs. They even took part in raising a significant amount of money for the cause by completing the 3 peaks challenge which included climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. They did it in terrible weather and managed to raise £8,700 for the CCPS, an amount of money that will truly make a difference to so many children that the scheme supports.

Congratulations Lilly and Zac – Greatest contribution to charity.

Unsung hero award

This student is great in every single way! He is the prime example of a Durrington student, he is very punctual, has great attendance to classes and extra-curriculars, a regular in science club. He is very kind and considerate of his friends and staff, always engaging in positive conversations in the corridor, very engaged in all challenges set at school. He is now due to be published a second time for a short story he has written. His story Balloonatics was published in May by the Young Writers publishers.  He is also part of the scholar’s academy. He is an absolute pleasure to have in our school every day. He does all of this without seeking praise and there is no one more deserving of the award more than Adrian.

Congratulations Adrian – Unsung hero award.

Outstanding contribution to extra-curricular activities

Tillie Creasey-Fumagalli

Tillie has already established herself as a legend in the PE department. Every night there is a club on, you can almost guarantee that she will be there. Not only does she turn up every night but her talent across all sports is there to see. This has led to her representing the school in every sport possible other than netball.

Her attitude is always outstanding as she is always willing to help both her peers and the teachers. She shows great pride in representing the school as her behaviour and great personality always shine through and are recognised by both our staff and staff of the other schools.

Tillie has also joined many extra-curricular activities in the performing arts department including Mary Poppins, we have no idea how she manages to get involved in so much!

Her from tutor says: “Tillie truly is the embodiment of the Durrington KAPP values. From the consideration and kindness that she shows towards her peers, to her unabashed enthusiasm for every single day at school and the opportunities that arise. She has taken part in a plethora of extra-curricular clubs and has represented the school in almost every possible sporting event, often to a great degree of success. She takes hold of every opportunity that comes her way and should take great deal of pride in all that she has done since starting her Durrington journey in September. Her future looks very bright!”

Congratulations Tillie – Outstanding contribution to extra-curricular activities.

Outstanding contribution to Attenborough award

Ruby Fullwood

What our staff have to say about Ruby: “Unbelievable student, so reflective and dedicated. Determined to always do her best and work out how to get every single mark. Not just full of answers but also full of questions showing a real love of the subject.Fantastic mathematician (better than she thinks she is!). Works incredibly hard and is an all-round good human. A joy to teach! Absolutely fantastic. Very resilient, methodical and took ownership of her learning from day 1 in year 10, then consistently achieved grades of 8+ in all assessments. Her academic success was down to reflecting on her learning and very hard work. Ruby was a pleasure to teach and very mature compared to many of her peers.  Ruby was a role model for our school and is probably one of the most hardworking students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. I will miss her in my classes. I cannot think of a more deserving student to receive this prestigious accolade. This student has been quite simply a legend, we have seen her confidence go from strength to strength and she is a delightful, kind student. She was so supportive to all students from all years and worked so hard throughout her time with us both in extra-curricular and lesson time. The quality of her performances are always outstanding and she doesn’t ever give herself the credit for how talented she is.  Her final work submission for GCSE was longer than most university dissertations!  She is the epitome of professionalism, not an ounce of arrogance and a generally awesome individual. An exemplary student in Spanish. She put excellent effort into her class work and homework and was always thoughtful and reflective in her learning. She identified her strengths and areas to improve, and actively sought and responded to feedback to get better and better. She asked insightful questions about the language to help improve her understanding and fluency in Spanish and it was a pleasure to be her teacher! We are genuinely so excited to see what you do with your life; the world is yours!

Congratulations Ruby – Outstanding contribution to Attenborough award.

Outstanding contribution to Pele award

Kristian Byfield

This student is the kind of student every teacher is grateful to have in the classroom, not just because of his academic dedication, but because of the quiet integrity with which he carries himself each and every day. He works hard, consistently putting in the time and effort not just to meet expectations, but to exceed them. Whether it’s staying late to refine a project, supporting classmates with their studies, or approaching every subject with genuine curiosity, he shows us what commitment really looks like.

But what stands out even more than his work ethic is his character. He is one of the kindest, most respectful young people you could hope to meet. He treats everyone, staff, students, and visitors alike with unwavering politeness. He listens with empathy, speaks with thoughtfulness, and is someone younger students naturally look up to.He’s also involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a challenge that demands resilience, teamwork, and perseverance. But he didn’t just stop at taking part. He saw a problem: some students couldn’t afford to take part in the programme, and he decided to do something about it. He fundraised, completely off his own initiative, so that others wouldn’t miss out on the same opportunities he’s had. That’s the kind of person he is, not content to succeed alone, but always looking for ways to bring others with him.In a world that can sometimes feel fast-paced and self-focused, this student is a reminder of the power of kindness, quiet leadership, and a strong moral compass. He is the kind of student who doesn’t seek the spotlight, but more than deserves it.Congratulations Kristian, you make our school a better place simply by being you.

Congratulations Kristian – Outstanding contribution to Pele award.

Nethini Gunasena

I am absolutely thrilled to announce the very deserving recipient of the Turing House Team Award! This individual consistently goes above and beyond in their learning, embodying our KAPP values in every aspect of their school life. Their commitment to excellence is truly remarkable, as they not only excel academically but also actively contribute to the positive and supportive environment that defines the Turing House team. As a vital member of the Senior Student Leadership Team, they’re an outstanding representative for Turing, demonstrating maturity, leadership, and an unwavering dedication to their peers and the school community. We honestly couldn’t be prouder of their incredible work ethic and the inspiring example they set for everyone around them. Beyond their amazing contributions within school, they’re also a force for good in countless activities outside of the classroom, demonstrating diverse talents and boundless energy. They’re always there to support others, whether it’s through a kind word, a helping hand, or, as I can personally attest, their encouragement as a volunteer at the Worthing Half Marathon – pretty sure their cheers added an extra mile to my run! Nethini – you’re an absolute star and a true credit to Turing House! Well done!

Congratulations Nethini – Outstanding contribution to Turing award.

Outstanding contribution to Seacole award

Jack Angell

This student is the fastest in our school’s history to receive a Platinum Seahorse, they achieved that before Year 8. Yes, before Year 8. At this rate, we’ll be naming a building after them by Year 10! They recently asked me what their next challenge should be, and in a moment of desperation, I offered him my job. They politely declined – probably wisely. This student fully exemplifies our school’s core values. I could easily spend the next 20 minutes talking about how they are incredibly kind to their peers, how they go out of their way to be polite and helpful to staff, how they push themselves academically every single day, and how they take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

Congratulations Jack – Outstanding contribution to Seacole award.

Outstanding contribution to Angelou award

Tristan Davids

This student has had an eventful journey through his time at Durrington — one filled with highs, a few challenges along the way, and countless moments of growth. Throughout it all, one thing has remained constant: his unwavering commitment to hard work, compassion, and kindness. Whether supporting his peers or engaging with staff, this student has always shown integrity at heart.By year 10, he had become a true role model who younger students could look up to, consistently living out the Durrington values in everything he did. We’re all excited to see where life, and rugby, takes him next at Cardinal Newman.Well done Tristan on receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Angelou House Award. You’ve truly earned it.

Congratulations Tristan – Outstanding contribution to Angelou award.

Student aspiration award

Isabella Duggan

Every so often, a student comes along who reminds us why we do what we do as educators. Isabella is one of those students. She has faced challenges, as many young people do, but what truly sets her apart is the incredible perseverance she has shown in overcoming them. Her resilience and determination are nothing short of inspiring. She is an exceptionally intelligent and diligent learner. Her science teacher said that they have had the pleasure of seeing her inquisitive mind in action. Not content with just meeting expectations, she has taken it upon herself to begin teaching herself GCSE Chemistry – two years early! Her thirst for knowledge is relentless, and she brings this energy into every lesson, always eager to ask questions, deepen her understanding, and challenge herself further. Her teachers consistently describe her as one of the hardest workers in the year group – a young person who not only engages with her subjects, but actively pursues new knowledge. She sets the bar high, not just for herself, but as an example to those around her.But this students’ strengths don’t stop at the academic. She is a kind and supportive friend, someone her peers can rely on. She recently moved into a new form group and, in an incredibly short time, became an integral part of that community. So much so, she was nominated for a Headteacher’s Award – a testament to how warmly she was received, and how warmly she made herself part of the group.

Congratulations Isabelle – Student aspiration award.

Student perseverance award

Ella Zeegers

This student is recognised due to the outstanding levels of perseverance that they have shown, not just in one subject are but across many. Over the last 3 years this student has been awarded a P for perseverance in every subject area apart from two. She has earnt 34 perseverance awards in just three years, I’m sure you’ll agree this is a huge achievement. This is significantly more than any other student in her year group and is a big reason for why she has been so successful since joining our school. Alongside this she also has 99% attendance, once again demonstrating her determination to get the most out of school.

Congratulations Ella – Student perseverance award.

Overcoming adversity award

Theo Hawkins

After undergoing major surgery last year, this student has worked hard and shown fantastic resilience to be back in school with over 90% attendance and increasing. This is despite often being in discomfort or feeling exhausted. We wanted to recognise his perseverance in improving his attendance but also his engagement in lessons. It has been great to see you back in school, enjoying extra-curricular opportunities such as trips and taster days, and we look forward to you continuing working hard into year 11. ‘Tough situations build strong people in the end.’ We are really proud of you.

Congratulations Theo – Overcoming adversity award.

Favour Ogboja

Since joining us at Durrington High School, last year, this student has thrown herself into reading and really pushed herself to try new fiction. They have been challenging themselves to read authors alphabetically since I set the challenge in Book Club at the beginning of the year. She is also, always keen to try the fiction I discuss regularly in reading lessons.

Congratulations Favour – The LRA reading award.

Outstanding contribution to the performing arts

Ellie Leaver & Isabel Cole

Ellie has been a wonderful ambassador for the performing and creative arts throughout her five years at Durrington, her voice and performance skills have continued to amaze and inspire us all.  Her commitment, energy and enthusiasm are abundant and she is an inspiration whilst remaining totally humble and supportive of others. She worked just as hard in her performing arts and music lessons as she did in extra-curricular activities and was a joy to teach.  She will be sadly missed by the performing arts team but we know she will go on to great things and are sure she will keep in touch!

We often celebrate our superstars in performance with rapturous applause and accolades but our productions would not be as amazing without the students who quietly help out and support.

Isabel has been an absolute legend over her time at Durrington, her performances at GCSE have shown she is able to perform to the highest standard but she has been an absolute rock backstage with all extra-curricular events.  We are particularly proud of her contributions, support and patience with our KS3 Drama club.

Congratulations Ellie and Isabel – Outstanding contribution to the performing arts.

Donald has shown in his lessons, and in code club, a deep understanding of programming concepts. Not just one particular language, or solving one problem – but how we can use programming to solve a wide variety of problems and produce practical software that people can use. He was able to listen to a problem described by a teacher, and then come back the next week with a working program that solved the equations required. It even had a working user interface. He is showing clear aspiration to become a great computer scientist.

His attendance to, and work in science club this year has shown his strong command of science and his ability to apply his knowledge consistently to a range of tasks and problems. By himself, Lewis successfully built a trebuchet from limited equipment that outshone other examples by far, in terms of structure and design. His work in science lessons continues to shine as a wonderful example that proves he could have a successful career in the sciences.

Sonny consistently demonstrates curiosity and enthusiasm for geography, going beyond the classroom to explore geographic issues and environments – as shown in his incredible piece of work Westward Ho! Congratulations Ivy – Outstanding contribution to careers award.

Outstanding scholar – KS3

Sophie Ball

A year group at Durrington consists of over 300 students so identifying one student that stands out for their academic excellence is never an easy process. However, there are certain students that achieve amazing things as part of our community and the winner of this award is most certainly one of those students. In their assessment they consistently achieve outstanding results, achieving the highest attainment group in 9 of their subjects. At the same time their teachers have awarded them the highest effort score possible in every subject and they have been awarded 25 KAPP awards – 18 of these for perseverance. On top of this they have taken part in numerous extra-curricular activities such as Dance Live and the whole school musical. In the words of their tutor this students “upholds every value Durrington stands for.”

Congratulations Sophie – Outstanding scholar in KS3.

Outstanding scholar – KS4

Jacob Hoarty

We are very privileged at Durrington to teach so many exceptional students and the number of students worthy of this award was vast, especially from our members of the KS4 Platinum Academy for highest attaining students. This award goes to a remarkable young man, who is both highly intelligent and dedicated to his studies, while also being incredibly well-rounded, polite and described by all his teachers “as a pleasure to teach”. When I founded the  Platinum Academy I told the students that less than 300 students across the country achieve a grade 9 in every subject and I saw no reason why members of our school community could not be one of those 300. While we now await the results of their summer exams the winner of the award could very well achieve this feat and would be fully deserving of such an accomplishment.

Congratulations Jacob – Outstanding scholar in KS4.

Darren Fox Award Outstanding contribution to science

Ellana O’Loughlin

The Darren Fox award celebrates the very best of our values here at Durrington, and tonight spotlights a student for whom excellence is second nature. This student has consistently shown a drive to further their understanding, critically think on the science that they are taught and to never stop getting better.

I have had the pleasure of teaching this student through years 10 and 11, so I have personally seen the relentless drive to succeed in science at GCSE and beyond. I’m sure that this person will have no trouble with meeting their goal career, with their consistency in achieving the highest grades throughout year 10 and year 11, and their visible passion for the subject.

Congratulations Ellana – The Darren Fox Award for outstanding contribution to science.

Sam Bassett Award for Performing Arts

Georgia Green & Beth Evans

Sam Bassett was in year 9 when I first started teaching at Durrington, a loveable cheeky chap who got involved in every production and thoroughly loved his Drama and Music. Sam was always a joy to watch on stage and always made me laugh with his quick ad libs.  This memorial award is in his honour as Sam sadly passed away 14 years ago and since then we have honoured his memory by presenting this award to a student who has gone above and beyond for the performing arts department.

Tonight we have two recipients of this award, as I mentioned earlier we often celebrate our performers but within the performing arts department Dance Live is a real highlight, one of the recipients of this award this evening is someone we are going to really miss, from organising stage crews, sorting resources, tirelessly giving up hours and always supporting the team to the very end.

The other recipient tonight has been in every production since she joined us in year 7, she has participated with energy, dedication and remains humble and wonderful.  She is an inspiration and a positive role model to all years, she is an absolute perfectionist and works so hard in all her performing arts lessons, she is appreciative, supportive and an absolute legend. Georgia Green and Beth Evans, you have been a pleasure and I am so grateful for your continuous  contributions.  The Sam Basset memorial award goes to you both.

Congratulations Georgia and Beth – The Sam Bassett Award for Performing Arts.

Martyn Simmonds Award for Geography

Nathan Dogbe

This student embodies all that this richly deserved award represents. He is curious, studious, empathetic, open minded and incredibly hard working. Rarely has one of our Year 11 geographers had such an insatiable appetite to learn and grow through taking every ounce of feedback on board and using it to improve as a learner. Of course, just as the clouds blanket the tree tops of the Amazon at days end, cloaking all of their traits above is a flair for the discipline of geography that has been a pleasure to witness. Well done Nathan, we all look forward to seeing where your journey takes you next.

Congratulations Nathan – The Martyn Simmonds award for geography.

She embodies all our KAPP values, always has a perfect uniform and a smile on her face. Even though she is only in year 8 she has already received 25 KAPP nominations.Effie’s form tutor comments on how she is involved in everything from performing arts to sports and she even makes the effort to help make our school a better place and has applied to become an anti-bullying ambassador too.

Congratulations Effie – Greatest contribution to school values.

Headteachers special recognition award

Henry Gill

It is my great privilege to present this special Headteacher’s Award to a truly remarkable student – Henry Gill. Henry has faced significant health challenges during his life, yet has shown an unwavering spirit, determination, and resilience – and always with a wicked sense of humour!  He’s an inspiration to us all. Despite the obstacles, he has continued to work hard, support others, and embody the very best of our school values – kindness, aspiration, perseverance and pride. His quiet strength and perseverance remind us that courage doesn’t always roar — sometimes, it’s simply the will to keep going.

Congratulations Henry – Headteachers special recognition award.

Headteachers special recognition award

Annabelle Chatfield

I feel hugely proud and privileged to be presenting this award to one of our fabulous students from year 11 this year who quite simply has embodied all that we stand for as a school in terms of personal values. The response from her teachers when I spoke to them about this young person was incredible.  Time and time again the words kindness, positivity, perseverance and happiness were mentioned.  Our award winner is a team player in every sense of the word and during her time at Durrington has made a quite exceptional contribution.  From Dance Live performances to helping at parents’ evenings her contribution has always been valued.  One thing that is really clear is that she understands the true meaning of the DHS KAPP values.  As part of our community she has been such a positive influence with her peers, chatted with teachers outside the classroom and always done so with a beaming smile on her face and with a hugely positive attitude.  Our award winner is aiming high for a future career in fashion design.  She has set herself up quite brilliantly for this next step producing stunning individual pieces this year as part of her GCSE Textiles course including one incredible final project.  This hasn’t happened by chance.  Her perseverance, dedication to improvement and willingness to work hard has been recognised by her achieving a total of 24 different KAPP awards during her time at DHS. Today she receives one final award from us, ahead of what are sure to be a set of GCSE grades to be proud of in the summer.

Congratulations Annabelle – Headteachers special recognition award.

Going beyond our best … our fantastic award winners Pride of Durrington 2025!
