At Durrington we know that giving students the opportunity to work in the real world is valuable. This year over 230 of our year 10 students left school for up to 4 days to try out employment. Students were first tasked with thinking about themselves and considering what it is they wanted to try. They then had to approach companies and even interview for positions.
The careers team were able to work with some students to offer supported placements at school partners such as The Grand Hotel, Watlow and The Shoreham Port Authority. In the build-up to the week students prepared in SME lessons and assembly by thinking about the skills they have and which ones they wanted to develop. When they returned to school, we helped them reflect on their experience and evaluate how it might shape their future.
In a survey the following week, 87% of students rated their experience above 4 stars with over 90% of students saying they felt the experience would or might help them plan their onward journey.
Toby Henry, our careers leader said “I want to thank every parent or carer who supported their child either finding a place or helping them through it. Both parents and students consistently tell us how much they value this opportunity and the change in confidence levels we see as students work through the week is incredible. They can use their placement as a reference on CV’s and we encourage each of them to reflect on how they felt about being in the real world. They were all amazing.”
I just wanted to send a quick email to say what a pleasure it was to have the two boys attend for work experience last week. They flourished here, and all staff spoke highly about both, we were very impressed. Employer at HOP Consulting
Elijah had a brilliant time on his work experience placement. So much so they have offered him a summer job during the holidays. Year 10 parent
“For my work experience I worked at a SEN Primary School called Palatine. I really enjoyed it, I worked in a reception class and helped support the children. I loved helping them and seeing how differently their minds work and it gave me so much insight in where I would like to work when I am older. I loved it so much that hopefully on my INSET days I will be able to go back.” Year 10 student
“I just wanted to say how wonderful your student Maddie was last week. It was an absolute pleasure to have her here and when a weekend vacancy arises, we will be in touch to see if she would like the position. Maddie was keen, professional and integrated into our team quickly.” Employer at BAKED
