Dear Parents and Carers,
We are excited to share an exciting opportunity for our year 7 students to engage with an award winning Author in a virtual event on Tuesday 11th June.
Students will get to meet bestseller Liz Kessler and hear about her new wartime book CODE NAME KINGFISHER, which explores the lives of two sisters who get involved in the Dutch resistance in Amsterdam during World War Two. They will hear stories about the unknown women and girls who worked in the Dutch resistance and helped fight the Nazis through secret missions and acts of bravery.
During their timetabled Period 2 lesson they will join their peers in the new performing arts centre where Liz will talk to students about the process of writing, including the research and the sources she uses to bring her work to life. All of these are vital skills they learn in their English lessons as well as History at KS3 and beyond.
Liz’s previous wartime book WHEN THE WORLD WAS OURS won numerous awards, including the Amazing Book Awards run by our School Library team. CODE NAME KINGFISHER has also been nominated for several awards, including The Children’s Book Award 2024, and has been described by librarians as a must read.
There will be no obligation to order a copy of the books, but if you choose to, we have been given special discounted prices through Ebb & Flo Bookshop, an independent bookshop that Liz is supporting through this tour.
We know this will be a really enriching experience for our students and give them some real life exposure to subjects that are not only important in school but the wider world as well.
