On Wednesday 22nd May students from Durrington High School participated in the District Athletics which took place at Worthing Leisure centre. Over 70 students from years 8, 9 and 10 competed in the junior and intermediate categories and were a credit to the school. The boys won overall in the junior, intermediate and combined categories, with the girls placing second in the 3 categories. Durrington placed 2nd in the schools table, beaten only by St Andrews and Davison (who combine their total scores for the final placings).
The students gave their all in every event they took part in. A special mention must go to Hollie Angell who was competing in her first athletics competition, participating in the greatest number of events of any student, taking on the 200m, 300m, long jump and 4 x 100m relay. Her attitude was superb as she showed commitment and determination in each event. It was also Halle Mangat’s first competition and she came 3rd in both the 200m and the discus, despite competing against girls a whole year older. Other notable mentions were Archie Sloan who won the 800m and the 1500m, amazingly winning the 800m by an incredible 200 meters! In the 100m Ethan Muirhead came an incredibly close 2nd place (photo finish!) to a student who is an England Schools athlete. The junior boys relay team also won the 4 x 100m by a good 50 meters.
All of the students really lived out the school moto by going beyond their best and it was a fantastic afternoon.
